Meet the new 2018 Ones to Watch!

Freshminds’ Ones to Watch is the UK's only peer-nominated talent spotting scheme. Now in its 17th year, it is our annual opportunity to recognise the future leaders hitting the business world from across the top UK universities. Each year, the calibre of individuals is outstanding and we love engaging with a whole new generation of graduates set to make big waves in their different endeavours.

Each ambitious member has an impressive portfolio of achievements and it is interesting to see what they will do next. Meet some of the new Ones to Watch, set to graduate in 2018!

 

Deniz Arikan
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Management

 

Alongside her studies, Deniz has deep involvement in the Warwick AIESEC society, working on the strategy of products and running the organisation of the society. She has a special interest in web and graphic design which was used to design and launch the AISEC Warwick website, as well as building a graphic identity for a start-up company, My Little Wish.
Deniz also undertook an internship at a marketing company in the retail, planning, accounting and IT departments to gain insights into
different branches of business and develop her marketing experience.

Amir Arshad
Bristol Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

Amir has a vast experience in undertaking internships at various corporations such as PwC, Mangroup and Robobank International, as well as being a skilled teaching assistant and tutor.
Amir has also been actively participating in extracurricular activities at his university as a consulting and acting as an analyst.

Alvin Ho Cheun Cham
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Mathematics

 

Alvin completed a summer internship at a Hedge Fund Advisory which saw him interviewing 13 hedge fund managers to study their investment strategies.

He was ranked top 10 in the Warwick Virtual Trading Competition which consisted of 120 participants and is the VP of the UK joint university Hong Kong career society. Here, he built relationships with 40 HK student societies in over 20 UK universities to engage a base of 3,000 members.

 

Ilya Altschuler
UCL Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

Ilya has work Experience at Vie International Financial Services, where he gained exposure to efficient wealth transfer through the use of life insurance products.

Most recently too, Ilya is a Securitized Products intern at Hypovereinsbank, UniCredit, where he is assisting the team on feasibility studies, origination, structuring and execution, as well as reporting across a number of transactions.

Christos Constantinou
Nottingham Ones to Watch

Studying:  Finance, Accounting & Management

 

Christos is the head of the Business School at the University of Nottingham and has obtained various commendations, including the Student Leaders Award and UoN Advantage Award.

He is also a Second Lieutenant at the Cypriot National Guard and has undertaken various summer internship placements, the most recent on the JPMorgan programme as an Analyst.   

Soumaya Bhyer
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: International Management

 

Soumaya was selected as one of the authors of The RegTech Book which follows the success of the best seller The FinTech book, the first crow-funded book on Fintech. The book will be published in January 2018. 
Soumaya’s drive for social work enabled her to co-found a children’s association where they planned and coordinated an annual summer camp for disadvantaged children in Casablanca, Morocco

Hamza Ebrahim
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: PPE

 

Hamza has work experience in financial statements, statistical analysis and research during his summer breaks.

He is also the Coordinator of Warwick Blackout which is a social start up initiated in 2015 that aims to conserve energy. Here he has managed the group’s operations, finance, publicity and collaborated with colleagues at Singapore University to expand the group internationally.

Jake Goodchild
Bath Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Business Administration

 

Whilst studying at the University of Bath, Jake was awarded Undergraduate of the year award 2017. He was selected as one of ten finalists for the ACCA future CFO award, an award which had over 1000 applicants.

Jake also worked as a volunteer where he assisted disabled youths at the Papworth Trust Larkfields Youth Club.

Tim Flanagan
LSE Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

Tim’s involvement with LSE’s societies is widespread. He is a committee member in charge of corporate relations for the LSE Economics Society, as well as acting as Vice Captain in the LSE Hockey’s Men 1st Team.

 

In preparation for his LSE course, Tim also worked in gastronomy in order to raise funds to travel to China to see how Eastern economic powerhouses differ from Western Economies.

Philipp Ershov
LSE Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Government and Economics

 

Philipp has undertaken a range of internship placements such as HSBC, Rothschild, Freshfields Bruckhaus Deringer and Parthenon-EY.

He also founded the LSE SU Neuroscience in the Social Sciences Society, in which they explore the biological basis of decision-making and its implications in various social contexts.

Kevin Gu
LSE Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

Kevin has received the Duke of Edinburgh Gold Award as well as the Temasek Academic Excellence Award and Xcel Leadership Award.

While volunteering at the YMCA in Singapore, Kevin organised 6 street events including a Street Art Challenge, raised £4,000 for Children’s Cancer Foundation in Singapore, mobilised over 200 volunteers, reached out to over 10,000 people, and successfully pitched their project to a local hotel group and won a £1,000 sponsorship.

David Weng Wei Fong
Imperial Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Electrical and Electronic Engineering

 

David’s background in interning at the Bank of America Merill Lynch at the Global Markets and Research Division catapulted him into landing several internships at high profile corporations and institutions.

In 2016, David became an author of “The Market Mogul” and received 4,444 reads & 694 shares on 5 published articles encompassing IBM, options, Italian Referendum, Dolby, and Indices.

Pajmit Gulati
UCL Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

Pajmit’s activities and achievements are widespread; he volunteered for Marie Curie, the Alzheimer’s Society and at The Golden Temple in Amritsar (food for refugees), as well as being an Investment Banking Top 100, SEO and Rare Recruitment and holding the Gold Crest Award for the Engineering Education Scheme.

While interning at Morgan Stanley Institutional Securities Spring Insight, Pajmit was awarded best presentation for ‘The Big Sell’. He has also completed an internship at Bank of America Merrill Lynch (BAML) Spring Insight.

Alexandra Dobra
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Behavioural Science

 

Alexandra is currently pursuing a PhD in behavioural science to help financial services companies generate better client value.

She has been published in leading journals and is an invited speaker at leading companies and business schools. Alexandra has received numerous international awards in recognition for her innovative thinking (i.e., Fallings Walls, Academy of Management).

Benjamin Hillyard
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Mathematics

Benjamin leads a Financial Technology Research team at the University alongside his studies.

He is also involved as a summer Assistant Researcher trying to automate a classification system for prophage using statistical and data science techniques, and is exploring careers from Finance and Artificial Intelligence, to Statistics and Bioinformatics.

Konstantin Hemker
LSE Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Computer Science

 

After his BSc in Management from LSE, Konstantin is going on to complete a Masters in Computer Science at Imperial.

He has internship experience at companies including EY, BCG and PIMCO Asset Management and also a wealth of positions of responsibly such as Treasurer of the LSE Emerging Markets Forum and LSE Student Representative. Konstantin was also Vice President of European Student Start-ups, the European-wide venture capital competition that spans over a network of 27 universities and 40+ investors.

Leo Holmgren
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Management

 

Leo holds a dual citizenship from Sweden and the United States, and while still living in Sweden he co-founded KBHB which has in the past organised events with up to 400 attendees under the subsidiary firm “Carpe Noctem”.

Leo held several responsible positions during his study time at Warwick, such as being the president and head of socials at the Warwick Business School Society (WBSS).

William Hinckley
Edinburgh Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

While working as a lead consultant at Freshsight, William led a team of 6 to deliver a marketing and sales strategy for a client £60,000 debt and 1 year to repay the loan. He managed to secure a contract for the sale of 1/3 of their stock that eliminated 50% of the debt.

William’s has founded the Socially Responsible Investment Club with the aim to develop a business plan and launch the UK’s first student run social investment fund.

Isaac Kamlish
UCL Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Mathematics

 

While working as a relations developer at Google, Isaac was invited to participate at Google’s Exclusive AI Summit and hosted a FinTech event at their London Headquarters.

Along with his professional achievements such as interning at HSBC, Google and FinTech High society, Isaac has also done some philanthropic work by volunteering at a dementia ward.

Christopher Huang
Oxford Ones to Watch

 

Studying:  Molecular and Cellular Biochemistry

 

While studying at the University of Oxford, Christopher was awarded the Principal’s Commendation twice for First-class performance in college Collections Examinations.

He also managed to deploy a £300K equipment fund to improve the facilities offered to the members of the Brasenose College Boat Club.

Niilo Laiho
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: PPE

 

Niilo speaks Finnish, English, Swedish and Russian. He is heavily involved in the Enactus Warwick Consulting society where he is a Consulting Client Portfolio Manager, signing clients and acting as their point of contact. He has also arranged 3 Assessment Centres with other executives and directed a portfolio of consulting projects.

As well as this, Niilo has worked as a Pro bono Consultant for the society in a team of 7, helping to create a strategy for a CSR-initiative for a major Islamic bank operating in the UAE.

 

Nikita Khodkov
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

Nikita participated in a one-month exchange programme among 12 selected students from Warwick University in Renmin University of China. He became the top achiever in Real Estate Finance and Investment (81%) and Hedge Fund & Its Strategies (96%) modules.

Whilst studying at Warwick, Nikita was also elected to represent over 1200 fellow students from 1st to 3rd year for the Warwick Economics Department Student-Staff Liaison Committee.

Camil Lazrak
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Management and Finance

 

During his undergraduate degree, Camil co-created a web tutoring platform linking students from all levels and categories. Students can find tutors from the highest UK universities for mentoring and academic purposes at the cheapest prices on the market.

He is also the president and founder of the first Moroccan University society in the U.K., and has taken various summer internship placements, most recently as an Analyst at RD Capital Partners in the private equity department.

Matthew Lawson
Oxford Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics & Management

 

Matthew was awarded the Fowler Prize for First Class work in Collections in Financial Analysis, General Management and Organisational Behaviour and Analysis, as well as the college prize for performance in first year examinations in core microeconomics, core macroeconomics, quantitative economics, finance, organisational behaviour & analysis courses.

Most recently though, Matthew completed an internship as a Retail Banking and Wealth Management Intern at HSBC Bank. He also has internship experiences with Deutsche Bank, UBS and JPMorgan & Chase.

Kee Yuen Loo
LSE Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

As vice-president of the LSE Hedge fund society, produced bulletins which analyse macroeconomic forces that drive markets, and offer views on potential opportunities.

Kee participated in a variety of extra-curricular activities, such as leading a team of competitive swimmers in training for the National Inter-School Swimming Championships, as well as leading a committee of 19 students in organising the largest student-led investment banking conference in Asia.

Alexandre Obadia
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Mathematics

 

Alex is the president of the Banking and Finance Society and has co-founded ‘Access’, an event and music company which has expanded to London and Hong Kong.

He has a varied bank of internship experience, including working at Morgan Stanley, an edtech start-up in London, joining Google for an internship at their Innovation Center in Poland, as well as researching the machine learning space at the software company, OpenOcean.

Sophie Rey

Studying: Management

 

In the course of her studies, Sophie has been co-head of external relations and marketing of the Warwick Finance Societies.

She has internship experiences and has also held positions at companies such as EY, EQT Partners AB, Goldman Sachs, The Blackstone Group, TypeScore and JP Morgan.

Joe Seddon
Oxford Ones to Watch

 

Studying: PPE

 

In 2016 Joe attended Tsinghua University as part of research project focusing on the outlook of the Chinese economy. This involved liaising with companies such as Mercedes-Benz, Nvidia, and JusFoun Big Data.

During the summer of 2017, he sought to explore the legal facets of the challenges facing the global economy by participating in the Summer Internship program at Slaughter and May. Here, he explored the impact of the new EU financial regulations pertaining to securitised assets introduced after the Financial Crisis of 2008.

Lovisa Sihvola
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Management

With a diverse work experience background in retail and gastronomy, Lovisa also became President of her school’s council and student representative of the school board in Helsinki where she managed a budget of 9000€.

In addition to that, Lovisa has focused on her management studies at Warwick where she was awarded the highest grade 1:1 in Quantitative Analysis for Management and Introduction to Financial Accounting.

Tom Szwarcenberg
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: International Management

 

While interning at Rothschild Investment Trust (RIT), Tom researched investment opportunities in public and private equity as well as providing a high quality first insight of finance and equity management by work shadowing the investment director.

Tom is the delegate for Warwick at the AIC Conference who was one of selected 320 students selected from over 7.700 to attend the London School of Economics’ 10th annual Alternative Investment Conference.

Samuel Unsworth
Bristol Ones to Watch

 

Studying: LLB Law

 

Samuel’s experience stretches from co-founding the University of Bristol Gin Society to the being the president of the University of Bristol’s Law Club and being elected as the “best law society president in the UK”.

As well as this, Samuel has undertaken various internship placements such as McKinsey & Company, Goldman & Sachs, Latham & Watkins, Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meager & Flom and Third Way Pro.

Thanat Vijitthanasarn
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

While holding the position of treasurer of the Chetham’s School of Music, Thanat was able to raise over £7,000 through events. He has also been awarded the University of Warwick Music Scholarship for Piano.

Thanat has held positions and completed internships in companies such as KPMG, Anaphite Technologies, Citigroup and Gleacher Shacklock LLP.

Chris Williams
Oxford Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Global Health Sciences

 

Upon completing a degree in Human Sciences at the University of Oxford, Chris completed a certificate programme at the Saïd Business School, University of Oxford which is designed to develop execution skills through financial and valuation modelling workshops, and real-life cases presented by financial institutions.

Simultaneously to that, he also completed an online certificate programme on fundamentals of business from the Harvard Business School.

Hugh Williams
Warwick Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Economics

 

Hugh’s philanthropic work extended to him being selected to be Head of the Boarding House to manage an 8-person house-prefect team and a boarding house of 70 boys. He liaised with the housemaster to ensure effective organisation and management of the house.

He has undertaken internships at corporations such as Payden & Rygel and the Royal Bank of Scotland.

Harri Worman
Bristol Ones to Watch

 

Studying: Engineering Design

 

Harri’s time at the University of Bristol was combined with his studies, leading a team for the Bristol Consultancy Society Project with Boston Tea Party LTD as well as undertaking various internships such as Zodiac Aerospace UK and Frazer-Nash Consultancy.

His studies enabled him to branch out into several different sectors (Manufacturing, Automotive & Aerospace) whilst dealing with a range of different clients in a consultancy environment.
